African Relish is a cooking school aimed at the international and local traveler who is looking for something different.

Tourists can participate in hands-on interactive cooking experiences, while learning about South African food and culture and the beautiful Karoo.

African Relish runs two basic course types throughout the year.

Our Anytime cooking courses, like Karoo Classics or Vegetarian, are half or full day and easy to book on short notice.

Culinary retreats

African Relish works with Book Clubs, Yoga Masters, cycle tour operators and artists to arrange weeks of cooking paired with other recreation.

Camilla’s Kitchen is a small café on the premises of African Relish Cooking School at 34 Church Street, Prince Albert. We have a cool verandah overlooking the garden and olive grove, and a shop stuffed with foodie delights.

Our dinner menu is based on sourcing ingredients as locally and sustainably as possible. Each evening we serve a set meal – plat du jour – show-casing the best produce available. Recipes focus on presenting the best meal possible from the ingredients we gather. We try to uphold the farm-to-fork ethos and cook everything from scratch.

In the kitchen is award-winning chef, former Woolies product-developer and cookbook author Camilla Comins. Her food writer and photographer husband Russel Wasserfall runs front-of-house.

We provide easy, country dining in a gentle, laid back style. We are licensed, so craft beer and a selection of wines picked from our favourite producers are on offer.

Cake and beverages are available at the shop each afternoon.

Open Tuesday to Saturday in season.

Swartrivier Farm is the oldest olive farm in the area and a true landmark of the Prince Albert community.

 

Beginning just beyond the town’s doorstep, our farm stretches over 668 hectares of beautiful Karoo countryside.

 

The 17 hectare olive orchards are home to more than 3,000 mature trees- Mission and Manzanilla, completed by Leccino, Frantoio and other oil cultivars. We have a proud tradition of growing delicious olives and producing our own extra virgin oil and other products, all available under the O for Olive brand.

 

Our products are available in the farm shop which also offers yummy breakfasts, light lunches and something for the sweet tooth.

 

A special offer includes a factory tour, tasting and light lunch for R95 per person.

We stock a large variety of local produce – olive oil and olive products, dried fig products, jams and preserves and dairy products from Gay’s Guernsey Dairy.

Prince Albert Spar aims to serve the community – tell us if you would like us to stock a specific product.  We offer a number of additional services such as doing special orders for restaurants.

We have had great feedback for our Sunday Garden Lunches

Our Sunday Karoo Lunch starts at 12h00. It comprises a choice of 3 courses (2 meat and 1 vegetarian) plus a dessert for R180.00 per person. Bread and vegetables are included.

EVENINGS

Seasonal flavours of home-grown herbs, fruit and vegetables. Mediterranean influences. Restaurant rated by Dine 2006, 2007 as one of SA’s top 100 restaurants. We do not have a credit card facility. However, we do have a liquor licence, a corkage charge is made if you bring your own wine.  The focus is on locally produced vegetables and free range birds, venison, and lamb.

Our price is R280.00 per person.

Hendry Olivier (Kokkedoor) has taken charge of running the Olive Branch. Our staff of the last 13 years are still with us and Bokkie’s role is now that of Italian (South African) grandfather and mentor. Bokkie has had to face up to the fact that more customers want to have their pictures taken with Hendry than he ever experienced!

The Victoria Room at the Swartberg Hotel offers a romantic candle lit dinner with interesting Karoo fare from our a la carte menu.  Open 7 days a week  from 6 pm to 10 pm (kitchen closes at 9:30 pm).
