Get up close and personal with local produce
Chances are good that you have not been on a farm for a while. Why not get a good look at where food comes from?
Here we put together everything that will make you and your family happy farm explorers. You will go home an expert – with arms full of good, local produce.
Every year in October, the Prins Albert Landbougenootskap hosts the Prince Albert Agricultural Show. This is an event not to be missed – prize winning animals, good entertainment and delicious food.
The village of Prince Albert grew from the first farm, Queekvalleij, established by Zacharias and Dina de Beer at the foot of the Zwartberg in 1762 and still supports an active farming community. Local farms yield produce of incredible quality. In the fertile valleys tucked into the folds of the Swartberg, farms produce deciduous fruit for export, wine, olives and figs. On the farms of the Great Karoo flocks of sheep and angora studs provide meat, wool and mohair.
The SanctuaryThe Sanctuary Contact: Mariette Hesqua
Open on weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. The Sanctuary is the home of the Depth Leadership Centre that works “beneath, between and beyond for a thriving psyche, community and planet”. We do a range of projects in Prince Albert.
We run a small café, coffee roastery and shop and offer a tranquil, private and relaxed place to eat simple, wholesome food, and think, work, or browse through our psychology library, or explore your psyche in the sand tray. We serve and sell fresh produce from our garden. We grow fruit, vegetables, nuts and herbs, and chickens for free range eggs.
We have a conference room with state of the art audiovisual equipment and free WiFi. As a team, we follow the principle of developing healthy relationships with ourselves, the community and the environment, and strive to look after you with care.
