The festive season kicked off in fabulous Prince Albert style with the Night Market Christmas Fundraiser. The town was out in full cheer, and in the spirit of giving, funds were raised for PADS and the Fransie Pienaar Museum.

Staying with the giving spirit, a special group of Prince Albert angels pulled together to spread some festive season happiness to the less fortunate little members of our community.

Boerewors rolls, watermelon, cold drinks, toys, and sweets were handed out to 140 gleeful recipients, all thanks to the Prince Albert Spar, Karoo Slaghuis, and the greater community that generously opened their purses.

A fantastic initiative driven by the Prince Albert Ratepayers and Residents Association, huge round of applause to them for cheering up the festive season all round!

Prince Albert is famous for many things, scrumptious cheese, fabulous figs, delicious olives and olive oil, the magnificent Swartberg Pass, breathtaking nature, perfect peace. The list goes on but most remarkable of all, are our town’s humans.

There was great excitement early December when Courtney Hundermark’s book ‘A Guide to the Reptiles of Prince Albert & the Swartberg Pass’, proudly and officially launched in Prince Albert.

The Karoo is home to an array of unique and diverse biota, both flora and fauna. This is Roosplaas, a combined labour of love by owners and overseers Christel and Neil Dixon. Neil has been a full-time gardener from the age of 16 and lovingly tends to all the flowers, roses being his passion. Christel has had a love for cooking from the age of ten and combined with Neil’s green fingers for all things growing, they are a match made in garden bounty heaven. This suitably brings us to Karoo Bounty, the name of the end product from this perfect union, a delicious range of pickled produce that is taking Prince Albert by storm.

Starting with a few bottles for friends and family five years ago, the venture turned into a bigger business in 2022 with stocks now available at Gay’s Dairy, Hendry’s Artisanal Bakery, The KarooHaus, and at the Saturday Markie where goods are sold by the maker herself Their beautiful roses and other flowers are also for sale seasonally, at the market or direct from the garden.

Introducing De Bergkant, Still Karoo. Dating back to the mid 1800’s, De Bergkant is a beautifully restored, nine-bedroom stay, an extended Cape Dutch home that is the epitome of elegance in architecture, while an important figure in the town’s history.

The recently transformed De Bergkant is furnished in collectable antiquities and local treasures, the hotel offers old-world glamour in four suites and five double rooms – all pet friendly, a sauna and steam bath, as well as three swimming pools set within lush gardens. A perfect October Karoo morning in beautiful Prince Albert saw in the start of the third Prince George 100 Miler. Thank you to all the cyclists and cheerers for supporting our beautiful town, hope you had a fantastic experience, see you next year.

Spring is the time for all things blossoming and new especially after good rain in the Great Karoo. The aloe flowers were out in full force early September, and these juvenile Malachite Sunbirds made the most of adding even more chirpiness to the beautiful spring atmosphere.

Prince Alberters certainly have talent, Michael Treloar of Karoo Lapidary being no exception with his beautifully handcrafted artisanal birdbaths. These artworks tick every bird’s drinking spot goals.

The pilot Craft and Design Academy Pop Up was hosted at the Karoo Souk in Prince Albert end October and our young students were eager to absorb and learn new skills through experimentation with ancient techniques, new materials, and disruptive approaches.

Forming part of the Milasande Organisation, professional designers from as far afield as Sweden and local artisans facilitated creative workshops and mental health awareness sessions over two weeks, growing and guiding students to excel in their chosen artforms of either woodwork or weaving.

The aim of the project has been to ignite interest among young people in peri-urban communities by demonstrating the vast possibilities and opportunities within the design and craft sectors with the hope that unemployed youth and aspiring creative entrepreneurs are empowered with essential crafting and design techniques.

Die Ou Stal on the R407 about 22kms out of Prince Albert town towards Klaarstroom is a place to vertoef, find a little pre-loved collectable, pat a horse, and have a slow coffee or tea or cordial along with a delicious muffin or cupcake.

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, you’ll see a sign on the road on your right for the pop-up Barn. Watch the birds, sit and reflect or read, take away (at no charge!) your own container with pure mountain water.

The inaugural Vino Camino got off to wine’ing start mid-August, showcasing a fantastic line up of talented producers.
Join us again next year 15 and 16 August for more happiness in a glass, great chats, and fabulous food at various venues spotted around our beautiful town.

Another inaugural event that we hope becomes a regular fixture is the Swartberg Music Salon which took place beginning August. The event got off to a classic start with resounding applause and encores roaring through The Showroom Theatre and NG Kerk venues.

Coinciding with the event, forty mini donated violins arrived and the littlies in North End are experiencing their first foray into classical music tuition, watch this space for updates.

The Prince Albert Parkie is turning heads for all the rights reasons. A group of superheroes have taken on the task of turning this previously neglected piece of ground into a beautiful recreational space.

The original superheroes, Brian Rademeyer and Hans Burger together with their teams, took charge a year ago, formulating the hard landscaping and design, removed unwanted overgrowth, installed irrigation, and put down grass, all to create a perfect platform for the next group of heroes to build on.

Current Wonder Woman of this garden team is Di Pudney, coordinator, motivator, plant finder, tool provider, lunch organiser, and amateur landscaper, just to mention a few of her superpowers.

Her Super Man is Ferdie Skaarnek who was instrumental in getting the Prince Albert Skills School on board, guiding, teaching and monitoring the younger superheroes since the project’s inception three months ago. Iron-Man Willy has generously shared his special powers with the children, teaching them about plants, pruning, cutting, planting, and cleaning up.

Superheroes must be nourished, enter Super Girl, Marion, of Prince Albert Café who ensures a weekly hearty lunch and lots of encouragement for this enthusiastic, green-fingered group. With these talented powers nudging them on, the PASSuper Heros cannot but fly and flourish, along with their beautiful green canvas that is evolving into something magical.

Daar was Julie maand ’n lekker kuier om die Stookketel! The Witblits flowed straight out the distilling kettle keeping visitors warm and glowing in wintery weather, all for the good cause of fundraising for the Fransie Pienaar Museum.

Leesfees 2024 was another wonderful weekend of words, we loved hosting all our written word fans, poets, authors, and filmmakers. We hope you enjoyed your time in our beautiful town and we look forward to welcoming you back again next year.

April saw us welcome back the talented cast and crew of Recipes for Love and Murder Season 2. Buildings changed colour and names, the streets were abuzz with lighting equipment rigs, and many Prince Alberters received their moment of fame as extras in the production. Oh what fun, and thank you to all involved for this wonderful economic boost.

The Swartberg 100 Gran Fondo, part of the UCI Gravel World series, once again took place in beautiful Prince Albert and surrounds. Dedicated cyclists were determined to show the Swartberg Mountains who is boss, amongst them F1 driver Valtteri Bottas and his partner Tiffany Cromwell who took the elite women’s win.

What we adore about November in Prince Albert is apricot season. These little orbs of orangy pink sweetness love the Karoo climate and show off their beauty and deliciousness to the max. Vrisgewaagd Farm was a hive of activity getting their harvest processed, packed, and ready for export.

December saw another wonderful solo exhibition opening at the Prince Albert Gallery. In case you missed it, The Nature of Patterning by Lisl Barry, is still on display until 14 January 2024.

November brought intrepid cyclists Emma and Oscar to their former home town Prince Albert, for a breather. The siblings’ 16 000km cycling mission started in Berlin and finished a few weeks ago in CT in their heroic efforts to raise €27 000 for Prince Albert Skills School and The Human League.

Although their massive feat is complete, the public is still able to donate via their Trycycle Africa website.

Besides apricots and cyclists, November also ushered in another successful Prince Albert Open Studios arty weekend. If you missed it, don’t despair, the next one is coming up 14 – 17 June 2024, we look forward to seeing you there.

There is a new shop in town that is quickly becoming a bolt hole for those that have forgotten their partner’s special day. Artisanal Lifestyle are purveyors of bespoke clothing, perfumes, footwear, accessories, and gifts. The luxury products are sourced from around the world by owner and curator Nicole Panaretos, an interior designer by trade with an eye for detail and all things beautiful.

Celebrating 13 years of Handmade-Karoo-Handgemaak happiness.

This community project was started by Ellen Joubert in 2010, armed with a few scraps of wool, yarn, fabrics and massive amounts of vision. The first two ladies joined the project crocheting hearts which were sewn on to tea towels.

Today the project has an emporium of beautiful products ranging from baby and children’s items through to homeware, all lovingly crafted by Prince Albert ladies who thrive on using their hands to create a livelihood for themselves and their families.

The Klaarstroom Hotel lies nestled in picturesque and historical village of Klaarstroom in the Prince Albert District. Guests can truly immerse themselves in the Karoo splendour of the Swartberg Mountains, the unique fynbos, and the old-world charm of this hidden gem.

The structure is still largely as it was originally built in 1874, with minor changes made when it was operated as a general dealership and private residence, mid-century. The new owners have taken care to restore it to its former glory as much as possible, complete with vintage and antique furniture.

Befitting of the hotel’s heritage, all nine rooms boast vintage and antique furniture, as well as luxurious linen and amenities to ensure guests’ utmost comfort. All the rooms have coffee and tea stations, as well as hairdryers and bathroom amenities.

The inaugural Prince Albert Open Gardens 30 September and 1 October was a wonderful success with many visitors already booking their space for PAOG 2024.

Over 12 unique Karoo gardens were open to the public, along with talks and interactive workshops hosted by garden design guru, Franchesca Watson, Karoo plant ecologist, Prof. Sue Dean, and expert foodscaper, Sue Torrance.

Another successful Us4Us festival under the belt with incredible talent being showcased. Considering the cold day, there was not much left to do but sing and dance.

A beautiful Karoo October morning saw off the Prince George 100 Miler participants as they sweated it out all the way to the more humid climes of George. Thank you to all the cyclists, supporters, and organisers for supporting our town, see you again next year.

The inaugural Rielfees end of October was a lot of dust-kicking fun. Schools from the greater Karoo area came together to show off their riel dancing talents and kick the Prince Albert dust far and high.

The Prince Albert quilting group honored local stalwarts Judy Maguire and Lydia Barella with unique personalised quilts in appreciation of their contribution towards preserving our town’s history.

Thank you, Nik Rabinowitz, for the side-splitting hilarity at Gay’s Dairy Barn. Although it was a cold night, the audience laughed themselves warm, also completely warming was that all proceeds were donated to PACT.

Looking for a special piece of the Karoo to wear as a trendy accessory? Look no further than Di van der Riet Steyn Jewelry. In a dorp rich in history, Di often walks nose down in the veld searching for that piece, bits of Karoo blue, green and red, that make one wonder who used that piece of crockery 150 years ago.

Shards of someone else’s precious plate or cup, wrapped in pure silver and then transformed into wearable art many decades later.

To coincide with Garden Day SA on 15 October 2023, we captured our green-fingered garden competition winners in their gardens with gorgeous and well-deserved flower crowns.

How can we not start off by gushing about the spectacular natural splendor carpeting Prince Albert and surrounds currently. The good winter rains brought out the most dazzling flower display, our heads are happily spinning in the kaleidoscope of colours.

Prince Albert hosted another wonderful Zwartberg Trapsuutjies mountain bike and trail running challenge beginning August and what would all that exercise be without a lekker Plaaskombuisfees kuier to reward the dedictated sporty sorts and their supporters.

Prince Albert welcomed back the much-missed Leesfees literary festival this August. The weekend of words ensured town was awash with authors, film writers, and literature fans alike, here is to more of the same next year.

In July our beautiful Zwartberg High School pupils dazzled the town in their fabulous finery. We wish them well with the upcoming exams, upwards and onwards, go out and make Prince Albert proud.

Sometimes treading on eggshells is not such a bad thing.

It’s just not ball if it’s not netball.

Not even cold July weather could deter enthusiasts as netball fever hit Prince Albert in a big way in the lead up to the Netball World Cup which played out in Cape Town end July.

The cheerful atmosphere and deliciously broad range of dishes ensure visitors and locals return to The Rude Chef Bistro time and time again. The big question: is she rude or isn’t she, our lips are sealed suffice to say the restaurant is perfect for the whole family, furry friends included.

Mother Nature has been putting on a spectacular show at the base of the Swartberg Pass. Entry is free and show times are continuous, so no excuses to miss this natural extravaganza!

We started our July/August Prince Albert Chronicles with images of sunshine and flowers. Hard to believe that less than two months earlier we could also experience freezing temperatures and snow. The Karoo may be an area of extremes, but beauty certainly remains constant!
